Huntington Beach gives strong showing at competition

The Huntington Beach Junior Lifeguards brigade that went down to
San Diego this weekend for the 2000 United States Lifesaving
Association’s Lifeguard Championships returned home Friday a successful
group, with 11 first place finishes in tow.
The four-day competition, held in the Pacific Beach area of San Diego,
along side historic Crystal Pier, continues today through Sunday, with
the Lifeguard competition.
Huntington Beach took nearly 100 athletes down to San Diego, city
Junior Lifeguard instructor, Gordon Duff, said.
In the AA Division (ages 16-17), Bret Zeldow finished first in the
Distance Run, and the duo of Alex Koller/Jane Hashimawari won the Rescue
Race.
In the A Division (14-15), Rory Kelly, who also placed second in the
Distance Swim, captured first place in the Run-Swim-Run event. Also in
the division, Huntington’s team of Elizabeth McGonagle, Kristina Eich,
Kelly, Bryce Elser, and Corey Miller, won the Swim Relay.
The B Division (12-13) competition featured a triple winner in Scott
Schauer, and a double winner in Aubrey Panis.
Schauer won the Run-Swim-Run and Distance Swim, and teamed with Panis
to win the Rescue Race. Panis, meanwhile, was the winner of the Distance
Swim.
In the C Division (9-11), Gus Hamborg took first place in the Distance
Run, Kyle Ryan (also second in the Run-Swim-Run event), won the Distance
Swim, and the Huntington squad of Daniel Morris, Alexis Schauer, Kamaile
Mahuna-alii, Chase Fedderson, and Ryan, won the Swim Relay.
Other top finishers from Huntington Beach included:
AA Division: Katie MacManus, second, Distance Run; Nicole Hyink,
third, Distance Run; Melissa Murphy, second, Distance Paddle; Jane
Hashimawari, second Distance Swim; Alex Koller, third, Distance Swim;
Colleen Coffin, third, Beach Flags; Elisabeth Bray, James Howarth, Ashley
Bookspan, Erin Bayes, and Alex Koller, second, Swim Relay.
A Division: Scott Fleming, second, Distance Run; Scott Fleming/Shawn
Kanoudi, third, Rescue Race.
B Division: Tony Guadagnini, second, Distance Race; Tristan Friend,
third, Run-Swim-Run; Alexandra Jaspers, third, Run-Swim-Run, and third,
Distance Swim; Lugar Choi, third, Distance Swim; Tristen Friend/Lugar
Choi, third, Rescue Race; Scott Schauer, Tristan Friend, Aubrey Panis,
Alexandra Jaspers, and Lugar Choi, second, Swim Relay.
C Division: Daniel Morris, second, Distance Swim; Caprice Thompson,
third, Beach Flags; and Jon Schramek, third, Beach Flags.
