Costa Mesa resident David Wilburn was recently named project manager
for Irvine-based R.D. Olson Construction, specialists in building hotels,
shopping centers and country clubs. Wilburn will be responsible for
budgeting, cost control, scheduling, procuring subcontractors and
coordinating drawings with subcontractors and owners. ... Bette Flick of
Costa Mesa has been appointed interim executive director of The Mediation
Center, a Costa Mesa organization specializing in low-cost and no-cost
mediation services, as well as mediation skills training. ... Costa
Mesa-based Orange County Council, Boy Scouts of America will honor seven
local leaders today at its Learning for Life program kickoff reception.
The recipients of the 2000 Women of Excellence awards have been nominated
and selected by their peers based upon the level of excellence attained
in their particular fields and their commitment to their communities. The
honorees are Joan Irvine Smith, Dr. Ellen Shockro, Dorothy B. Stillwell,
Orange County Supervisor Cynthia Coad, Dr. Mary Wagner, Melinda Masson
and Isabelle Villasenor. ... Stephanie Cole of Newport Beach made the
dean’s list for the spring semester at the University of San Diego. Cole,
who will be a senior this fall, had a grade-point average between 3.33
and 3.64 for the semester. She is majoring in diversified liberal arts
with a concentration in human development. Her parents are Stan and
Maureen Cole of Newport Beach. Cole is a 1997 graduate of Mater Dei High
School. ... Brad Smith, an associate with Taylor & Associates Architects
of Newport Beach, recently was elected president of the Southern
California chapter of the International Interior Design Assn., a
professional networking group and educational association of more than
10,000 members in eight specialty forums, nine regions and more than 30
chapters around the world. ... Corona del Mar resident Penny Marston has
been named to the dean’s list at Loyola Marymount University for the
spring semester. She will be a senior in the fall. ... Sarah Ray and
Joshua Weinstein of Corona del Mar, and Priya Lal of Newport Beach were
named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Columbia University.
This honor is reserved for students who have a 3.33 index or higher. ...
Civic leader Linda Schulein has been elected president of the Community
Foundation of the Jewish Federation of Orange County in Costa Mesa.
Previously, Schulein has been the foundation’s vice president for grants.
She is a past president of the Newport-Mesa Schools Foundation and the
Orange Coast Interfaith Shelter. Schulein is founder and past president
of Friends of the Orange Coast Interfaith Shelter and Club 100-Girls Inc.
of Orange County. She has been honored by the Orange County Human
Relations Commission, Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce, American Jewish
Committee and Soroptimist International of Newport Harbor. Election of
nine new members to the foundation’s board of directors has also been
announced by outgoing president Michael Gordon. The new board members
are: Hinda Beral, a founder of University Synagogue; Gary Brahm,
executive vice president of Chapman University; civic leader Les Bursten;
attorney Michael Gertner; Richard Gollis, principal of The Concord Group;
Phyllis Rodgers, executive board member of Heritage Pointe; and civic
leaders Cecilia Goodman, Lillian Conrad and Jene Witte.
