Swimming: Records fall at South Coast Finals

- Four girl’s records were set by Harbor View’s swim club as it

won the 2000 South Coast Swim Conference finals Saturday with an overall

score of 1,927. Newport Hills placed fourth with 1,375 points. Both its

girls and boys teams were fourth.

Vivian Liao set a record in the girls 13-14 100-yard freestyle relay

with a winning time of 57.22 to help Harbor View’s girls team win with

981.50 points.

Harbor View’s Heather Hapeman set a new mark in the girls 15-18 100

free with a 56.37. She also won the girls 15-18 50 breaststroke in 33.69.

Ashley Chandler’s record came in girls 11-12 50 butterfly. She beat

the rest of the field by almost three seconds, clocking in at 30.82. She

also won the 11-12 50 backstroke in 32.58.

Finally Christina Hewko’s 29.91 in the girls 15-18 50 backstroke is

now the best time.

Another two-time winner from Harbor View is Heather Van Hiel, She won

the girls 7-8 25 free (15.75) and the 50 free (35.12). Van Hiel also

placed third in the girls 7-8 25 breaststroke (19.62) behind two

teammates, winner Kelsey Larson (19.47) and runner-up Amanda Nickel

(19.60).

Harbor View’s boys team won with 945.50 points. Matt Berry won two

boys events in the 6 and under age group. He was victorious in the 25

free (18.85) and the 25 backstroke (23.55). Michael Liao and Peter

Weidner finished 1-2 in the boys 9-10 50 backstroke with respective times

of 19.65 and 19.72.

Patrick White placed first in two events for Newport Hills. He was

first in the boys 9-10 50 free (29.10) and the 50 backstroke (34.69).

Other winners from Newport Hills are Kasey Kipp in the girls 9-10 50

free (31.84), Anthony Marralle in the boys 9-10 50 breaststroke (40.80),

Tyler McClellan in the boys 13-14 50 breast (32.87), Gunnar McClellan in

the boys 13-14 backstroke (31.00) and Sarah Furgatch in the girls 7-8

butterfly (17.00).
