NEWPORT BEACH - Brooke Fairchild, hired in early June as Newport
Harbor High’s new girls basketball coach, has resigned because of
personal reasons, she confirmed Wednesday.
Fairchild, a former women’s basketball player at Pepperdine who
previously coached at Gateway High in Colorado, was hired to replace
Gregg Savage, who resigned following the 1999-2000 season, in which the
Sailors finished 4-23. They were 19-36 in Savage’s two years.
“I’d rather not comment on anything,” Fairchild said. “There are
personal family issues I’m dealing with.”
The Sailors, who could promote a coach from the lower levels or go
through another arduous hiring process, return most of their players from
last winter, including Athena Vasquez, who led the Tars with a 5.2
scoring average as a freshman.
