Barons shine in Las Vegas

The Fountain Valley High boys varsity basketball team put on a

strong showing in Las Vegas last weekend, winning three games at the

Adidas Big Time Basketball Tournament.

The Barons won their first three games in the 312-team tournament,

beating the Oklahoma Bombers (54-49), the Fullcourt Express of Colorado

(54-52), and the Montana Hoops (59-55), in open pool play to advance to

bracket play.

Fountain Valley was one of a handful of high school teams, Fountain

Valley Coach Chris Madigan said, to advance from pool play to bracket

play, where the Barons were eliminated by eventual tournament champion,

the Atlanta Celtics, 84-46.

Many of the participants were AAU teams.

Baron standouts in the four games played at Mohave and Durango highs

included point guard Daniel Torres, guard Tucker Fendon, and forward Matt

Ball.

“I’m really pleased with how we came out of the tournament,’ Madigan

said. “It was a great experience for our team, and playing against that

level (AAU) of competition can only make our team better.”

Fountain Valley went from Las Vegas to compete in the Dana Hills

Tournament, which they opened Monday with a 58-31 rout of Northwood. The

tournament continues today, and concludes Friday.
