Tennis: Holland, Hawkins and Jack advance, but Damion and Lal

default

NEWPORT BEACH - In the lone singles match between local players,

Corona del Mar’s Brittany Holland swept Costa Mesa resident Kelly Nelson,

6-1, 6-1, in the Junior Tennis Classic at Balboa Bay Racquet Club. But

she will not face another local, top seed Leslie Damion, in the girls 16

quarterfinals.

Damion, a senior at Corona del Mar High, defaulted her round of 16

match because of a back injury. She was one of two local top seeds to

pull out of the tournament. Neeta Lal of Newport Beach, the No. 1 seed in

the girls 18 singles bracket, could not get out of summer school to play

her round of 16 match.

Holland, who could have faced Damion in the quarterfinals, gets Jenny

Tortorea of Santa Ana instead. The winner advances to Thursday’s

semifinals. Megan Hawkins, a Costa Mesa resident and Newport Harbor High

junior, advanced to the in girls 16 quarterfinals with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep

over Johanna Phillips.

Vanessa Dunlap of Newport each knocked off the girls 14’s No. 2 seed, Carolina Velasco, 6-1, 6-2. She will face another seeded player Juliette

Mutzke of Newport Coast, in the semifinals. Mutzke defeated Elle

Cruishank, 6-2, 6-2.

The two local No. 1 singles seeds on the boys side had no trouble.

Boys 18’s top seed Hunter Jack won his first match in the round of 16

with a 6-0, 6-2 rout of Justin Green. His quarterfinal opponent today is

Hadley Ogle, the son of tournament director Bob. In the CIF Southern

Section Division I second round, Jack, a senior at CdM, defeated Ogle,

who attends Irvine, 6-4.

The boys 18’s No. 4 player Michael Bean was another seeded local to

fall out of the tournament. He was upsetted by Jeff Malawy.

Ryan Caughren, the top seed in boys 10, got by Warren Hardie, 6-3, 6-2

to reach the quarterfinals.

Other locals to advance to the quarterfinals include the boys 16’s No.

3 seed Peter Kulmaticki, who was an easy winner over Jeffrey Brenner,

6-1, 6-0. Boys 14 No. 2 seed Kaes Van’t Hof got by Derick Mitre, 6-3,

6-2. After a tough three-set match on Monday, Robert Khoury, the

fifth-seed in boys 12, was perfect against Carlos Gomez, 6-0, 6-0.

In one of the first doubles matches of the tournament, Hawkins and

Erika Buder, both teammates on Newport Harbor’s girls tennis team, beat

Newport Beach residents Cheryl Dobson and Cammie Quinn, 7-5, 6-2 to

advance to the girls 16 doubles quarterfinals.
