Tennis: Locals set to compete at Junior Tennis Classic 2000.

NEWPORT BEACH - Forty-three girls and 38 boys from the Newport

Beach and Costa Mesa area are scheduled to play in the Junior Tennis

Classic 2000 at Balboa Bay Racquet Club. The Tournament begins today and

is set to go through Friday and features players from age 10-18.

Four Newport Beach singles players are top-seeded in their respective

age groups. Hunter Jack, a senior at Corona del Mar High, is the No. 1

player in the boys 18 singles tournament and has a bye in the opening

round. Hadley Ogle, son of tornament director Bob Ogle, is also in this

draw and could face Jack in the quarterfinals.

Michael Bean, another senior at CdM, is the No. 4 seed, and he also

has a first-round bye. If CdM senior Shaan Wadhwa gets past first-round

opponent Jeff Malawy of Huntington Beach, he gets Bean in the Round of

16.

Neeta Lal of Newport Beach is the top seed in the girls 18 singles

division. Her opponent in the Round of 16 could be Jaime Feichter of

Newport Beach. Erin Herrel and Kristen Griffith both have byes in the

first round. Griffith’s next opponent is already determined as Kelly

Faulstich of Encinitas also had a bye.

There were no byes in the girls 16 singles tournament.

Leslie Damion, a CdM junior, is top-seeded. She faces Christine

Lalonde of Orange. There are 11 other locals in this tournament. Erika

Buder, a Balboa Island resident and Newport Harbor graduate, Corona del

Mar’s Brittany Holland, Newport Harbor junior and Costa Mesa resident

Kelly Nelson, Newport Beach’s Amber Ray and Christin Early are all in the

top half of the bracket.

Costa Mesa residents Megan Hawkins, a Newport Harbor junior, and

Krista McIntosh, a sophomore with the Sailors, are in the the second half

of the girls 16 singles draw. Corona del Mar resident Sara Bryan and

Newport Beach’s Emily Boyd and Carmen Khoury are also in this bracket.

Newport Beach’s Ryan Caughren is the top seed in the boys 10 singles

and automatically advances to the Round of 16. Four Costa Mesa residents,

C.J. Chomeau, Henri Chomeau, Charlie Alvarado and Charlie Corum, are in

the draw, along with Newport Beach’s Daron Arnold and Corona del Mar’s

Parker Rhodes.

Five CdM students are featured in the boys 16 singles. Senior Peter

Kulmaticki is the No. 3 seed and has a first-round bye. Sometimes CdM

doubles partners Ryan Stockwell and Justin Ning face each other in the

Round of 32. CdM’s Josh Stuart and Bryan Warsaw are also in the draw.

Newport Beach’s Issei Saida and Patrick Ahearn are also in the Round of

32. Costa Mesa’s Andrew Hinger must win a match against Newport Coast’s

Erik Frisbie to advance.

There are also four local doubles teams in the girls 16 group. Claster

and Katie Tenerelli, who also played together at CdM, are teamed

together. Buder and Hawkins will face Newport Beach’s Cherly Dobson and

Cammie Quinn in the first round. McIntosh and Nelson are also teamed

together.

Twelve local players are in the girls 12 singles tournament, with

Newport Beach’s Sarah Geocaris the No. 6 seed. In the only first round

meeting between locals, Newport Beach’s Jillian Braverman faces Corona

del Mar’s Katie McKitterick.

Newport Beach’s Hayley Young, Lindsay Norman, Dailey Wiese, Miranda

Young, Carly Adams, Brittany Cluck, Corona del Mar’s Rachel Bryan and

Costa Mesa’s Karina Van Leuven are also in this age group.

Wiese is also playing doubles with Newport Beach’s Elizabeth Van’t Hof

in girls 12. Hayley and Miranda Young are also teamed together, and so is

Alex Gurnee and Whitney Wiese.

No. 5 seed Juliette Mutzke of Newport Coast leads 11 local girls in the 14 singles tournament. Newport Beach’s Diana Khoury has a tough

first-round opponent against No. 3 seed Amy Beck of Laguna Niguel.

Other competitors include Newport Beach’s Bonnie Adams, Natalie Citro,

Sarah Griffith, Adrienne Olson, Jamison Steele and Vanessa Dunlap, and

Corona del Mar’s Jaclyn Manning, Lauren Pasquarelli and Courtney

Carnahan.

In girls 14 doubles, Adams and Dunlap are teamed together, and so is

Griffith and Allie Powers. Newport Beach’s Brittany Cluck will compete

with Irvine’s Nora Bugescu.

Newport Beach’s Charlie Farmer and Kaes Van’t Hof are the top boys 16

doubles seed and have a bye to the semifinals. Shaun Macguire and Brennan

Roberts of Corona del Mar are also in the semifinals.

In boys 14 singles, Jake Fleming is the No. 6 seed. Macguire, Roberts,

Farmer and Van’t Hof are also in the draw, along with Newport Beach’s

Tyler Deck, Nicholas Gingold and Newport Coast’s Matthew Chou.

Fleming is one half of the top doubles team in the boys 12 tournament

along with Irvine’s Michael McClune. Corum is also in the doubles

tournament with Huntington Beach’s Graham Witherby. Newport Beach’s Ian

Connolly and John Hutchinson are teamed together.

Seven local boys are in 12 singles, including No. 5 seed Robert Khoury

of Newport Beach. Corona del Mar’s Matthew Walters and Robert Khoury are

in the top half of the draw. Newport Beach have three other

representatives, with Hutchinson, Connolly and Kenneth Wong.

Three local players are in the girls 10 singles tournament. They are

Newport Beach’s Whitney Wiese, Costa Mesa’s Meghan Chomeau and Corona del

Mar’s Alexandria Walters.
