Khoi Phan, 21, of Costa Mesa, received a scholarship award at the 13th

annual Southern Area Foster care Effort luncheon. The annual event was

held June 30 at Pasadena’s Ritz Carlton Hotel. Phan, a former foster

child who came to the U.S. at age 10 from Vietnam, was honored along with

six other foster care young adults for their accomplishments and

dedication to foster children. Phan is majoring in physics at UC Irvine.

... Laurent Rais graduated from Simon’s Rock College of Bard in

Massachusetts with a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts May 22. Rais is

the son of Costa Mesa residents Liliane and Michael Rais. ... Newport

Beach’s Hill Partnership, Inc. Architects has been awarded a Gold Nugget

Award of Merit for excellence in architectural design in the category of

assisted living. The winning project is Sunrise Assisted Living of

Hermosa Beach. ... Corona del Mar resident Renata Hoddinott, daughter of

Christopher J. Hoddinott, earned academic honors from the Loomis Chaffee

School in Windsor, Conn. ... Alexandra Robinson was awarded the Balboa

Bay Republican Women Federated’s $750 scholarship. The Newport Harbor

High School graduate was selected for academic excellence, leadership and

community service. Robinson plans to attend Chapman University this fall.
