FOUNTAIN VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT WRAP-UP

ISSUE: CLASS-SIZE REDUCTION

Vote: 5-0

Summary: At its July 6 meeting, the school board voted to apply for

federal class-size reduction funds for the 2000-2001 school year. The

money would be used to hire additional staff to reduce the reading and

language arts class sizes in sixth grade.

ISSUE: CALWORKS FUNDING

Vote: 5-0

Summary: The school board agreed to allow the district to apply for

CalWORKS Incentive funds from the county for the expansion of

after-school programs. The money would fund supervised after-school

programs at each middle school, and the one-time purchase of materials

and computers for the Extended School Program. The amount requested is

$600,000 for three years.

ISSUE: OKA PLAYGROUND

Vote: 5-0

Summary: The board accepted a $20,772 grant from the California

Department of Education to fund child care and development facilities

renovation and repair. The money will be used to provide a playground for

the state preschool program at Oka Elementary School, which will

eliminate the need to share the school’s kindergarten playground.

ISSUE: PROGRAM PLANS

Vote: 5-0

Summary: The board approved the schools’ 2000-2001 improvement plans,

which addresses curriculum, instructional support and self-assessment.

ISSUE: STUDY SESSION

Vote: No action taken

Summary: Before the meeting, the board of trustees held a study

session to discuss the strategic goals and interests for the 2000-2001

budget. Among the goals discussed for the nearly $2 million in funding

were implementation of the math and English standards in all classrooms,

improvement of teaching and learning, efficient delivery of special

education services, improvement of employee compensation and personnel

needs.
