THE LIONS
Tony Altobelli
Despite having no seniors, the Vanguard University women’s
basketball team still managed to reach the NAIA National Tournament and
finish with a top-10 national ranking, capping the 1999-2000 men’s and
women’s athletic year for the Lions.
The Lions, using seven freshmen, three sophomores and three juniors,
won the Golden State Athletic Conference regular season title and
finished 28-7.
Another national-tournament qualifier was the men’s tennis team. Led
by senior Stefan Johansson, the Lions (22-4) ended the season ranked No.
3 in the NAIA, the highest national ranking for any sport in the history
of the school.
Individually, men’s soccer standout Diego Doni was first-team All-GSAC
after scoring 17 goals in 15 games, the second-highest in the conference.
Another first-team selection was baseball player Kevin Candelaria, who
batted .304 with seven home runs and 31 RBIs.
