Huntington Valley outlasts Ocean View, 1-0
In a terrific pitcher’s duel that featured 22 strikeouts, the
Huntington Valley Cubs outlasted the Ocean View Brewers, 1-0, to win the
2000 District 62 Tournament of Champions Minor B Division title at Ocean
View Little League.
Cubs starting pitcher Shawn Stiffler stifled the Brewers in the first
three innings, striking out seven while giving up just two hits to the 11
batters he faced.
Ocean View starter Ryan Vandenberg was equally impressive, fanning seven
of the 11 he faced.
The Cubs broke through in the second inning as Dave Folger led off with a
single up the middle, then stole second and third, before scoring what
turned out to be the game’s only run on a wild pitch.
The defensive struggle continued the remainder of the game and Ocean View
reliever Zack Couey struck out two over the final two innings.
Meanwhile, Cubs closer Ryan Miller made sure the one-run lead stood as he
struck out six of the final 11 Brewer hitters. The Cubs’ defense also
made three key ground-ball putouts, with first baseman Daniel Tierney
twice digging out low throws to record outs.
Miller gave up two hits, walked none and stuck out the final batter to
end a well-played, error-free contest.
“Ocean View is a very good team, and a classy team, too,” Mike Tierney of
the Huntington Valley coaching staff said. “This was a tough battle all
the way and both teams have a lot to be proud of.”
The Cubs roster also includes: Drew Hainsworth, Brian Schwartz, Ricky
Marin, Nick Mazzone, Connor Baggett, Patrick Doran, Tevah Jones, Ryan
Little, Anthony Valenti, Manager Nick Mazzone, and coaches Dave Folger
and Dave Schwartz.
