NBLL Majors: Giants ‘slam’ Mariners

NEWPORT BEACH - Michael Kordich hit a grand slam in the bottom of

the sixth inning to lead the Giants over the Mariners, 7-4, last weekend,

in the second round of the Newport Beach Little League Majors Division

playoffs.

Kordich’s blast scored Tommy Hutchison, Jaffer Kattan and Zack Milder for

the comeback win.

The slugger also pitched three scoreless innings for the Giants and added

a double and single to his offensive stats.

The Mariners were led by Tony Jones, who had a triple and single and

started a sixth-inning rally to put them up a run before Kordich’s blast.

In other Majors action:

Red Sox 5, Dodgers 2 - Red Sox pitchers Steven Hillgren and John Angelo

combined to shut down the Dodgers.

Hillgren and Angelo combined to strikeout 11, keeping the Dodgers’ bats

quiet.

Angelo, Hillgren, Brett Crowley and Tanner Nuzum each had key hits for

the Red Sox, while Michael Ford, Jake Wuebben, John Gothard, Grant

Gerdau, Alex Mathews and Jason Poulsen anchored the defense.

For the Dodgers, Nick Pike pitched a complete game, striking out three,

while Matt Raiger had a hit and two runs scored.

The Dodger defense was led by Jamie Bloom, Sean Mohler and Alex Johnston.

Yankees 11, Mariners 1 - In playoff action, the Yankees used a big

offensive inning to defeat the Mariners.

Kyle Legrands had a key two-out hit to spark the Yanks’ offense, while

Kyle Schneekluth pitched a complete game, striking out four.

Offensively for the Yankees, Mike Orozco had two hits, whileSchneekluth,

Andrew Kelligan, Peter Berg and Zack Von Berg each added a hit.

The Mariners were led by pitcher Willie Harrison, who struck out four

over three innings of work and Connor Ferguson, who made a stellar

defensive play.

Yankees 6, Cardinals 1 - Vinnie St. John pitched a complete-game

one-hitter to lead the Yankees over the Cardinals.

Saint John struck out eight and allowed no walks.

Mike Orozco had three hits, including a home run to lead the Yankees

attack.

Kyle Schneekluth and Zack Von Berg each added a pair of hitsfor the

Yanks.

The Cardinals were led by William O’Bien, who had a base hit and Ryan

Telles, who sparkled defensively at first base.

Braves 7, Dodgers 5 - In a back-and-forth contest, the Braves prevailed

over the Dodgers.

Tyler Ellis pitched five innings for the Braves, striking out seven

Dodgers, while Matt Burgne sparked the offense with a double and a

single.

Other offensive stars for the Braves were Andrew Dialynas, Evan Zoller,

James Gray and Paul Knezevic.

Martin Ostrowsky, Zak Warsaw and Jordan Taormina keyed the Braves’

defense.

For the Dodgers, Matt Raiger, Jamie Bloom, Allen Hardison and Shaun

Mohler each delivered key hits.

Red Sox 12, Diamondbacks 3 - John Angelo had three hits and scored three

runs to lead the Red Sox over the Diamondbacks.

On the mound, J.R. Dion and Tanner Nuzum combined to strikeout four over

four innings.

Other key hits were provided by Steven Hillgren, Dion, Michael Ford,

Brett Crowley, Grant Gerdau and Jason Poulsen.

For the D-Backs, Scott Colton pitched well, while Sean Maxwell, Peter

Poletaev and Valentin Ivanitsky each had key hits.

Red Sox 13, Reds 12 - Jake Wuebben’s sixth-inning hit scored Tanner Nuzum

to break the tie for the Red Sox.

J.R. Dion, Steven Hillgren and John Angelo each pitched well for the Red

Sox and all scored first-inning runs to spark an early lead.

The Reds rallied in the sixth inning with hits from Jake Lemmerman,

Blaine Nielsen and Tyler Kent.

Braves 7, Red Sox 3 - Strong pitching by Evan Zoller, Andrew Dialynas and

Tyler Ellis led the Braves over the Red Sox.

Zoller pitched four strong innings, allowing only one hit, while Dialynas

and Ellis came in to close out the game.

For the Red Sox, J.R. Dion and John Angelo each pitched well.
