Golf: Most likely to succeed

The Costa Mesa city championship -- formerly known as the Will

Jordan Classic -- is Aug. 5-6 at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club.

Mark O’Meara, a winner of two majors on the PGA Tour, and Scott Simpson,

the 1987 U.S. Open champion, are members of the Costa Mesa city

championship alumni.

Pelican Hill Golf Club has announced special rates and starting times for

ladies, seniors and juniors, Lynn Davis, the club’s director of

marketing, said.

The senior and junior programs are already in place. Seniors can book tee

times Monday through Thursday before 8 a.m. for $99, which includes a

cart. These reservations can be booked one day in advance. The senior

rate is for players 55 and older.

When accompanied by an adult, junior golfers (16 and under) can play

Pelican Hill everyday two hours after twilight begins for free. The adult

rate is $50, which includes cart. Reservations can be booked on the day

of play.

Ladies Day at Pelican Hill began Tuesday, which means all ladies (all

day) enjoy green fees for $99, which includes cart and a special Ladies

Day gift for the week. The Ladies Day package also includes free range

balls for warming up and free on-course beverages. Any merchandise

purchased by the lady golfers in the golf shop will be discounted 25%.

Ladies can book tee times one day in advance, based on availability.

The Estancia High Eagle Golf Classic is June 19 at Costa Mesa Golf &

Country Club beginning at 10 a.m., a four-player best-ball scramble

format. The cost is $340 per foursome or $90 for an individual.

The seventh annual event includes green fees, cart, dinner and prizes,

while benefiting the Estancia Athletic Department. Details: (949)

A putting challenge and silent auction fund-raiser for veteran baseball

umpire Jack Wildes, a familiar face among Newport-Mesa School District

players the last 40 years, will be held Saturday at The Greens in Irvine.

The inaugural Jack Wildes Golf for Life Putting Challenge from 8 a.m. to

noon will help raise funds for the Wildes family. He was diagnosed with

cancer in August 1999.

The facility is an 18-hole putting course. The Golf for Life event is
