COSTA MESA - Corona del Mar High doubles partners Michael Bean and
Peter Kulmaticki won three matches Saturday at the Costa Mesa Tennis
Center to advance to Friday’s CIF Southern Section Round of 16.
CdM sophomore Cameron Ball, however, the No. 1 seed in singles, was
forced to default due to joint pain, according to Sea Kings Coach Tim
Mang.
“I didn’t know Cameron was hurt, until he showed up (Saturday) morning,”
Mang said of the Pacific Coast League singles champion, who is now
questionable for the Division I team playoffs, which continue with
Tuesday’s quarterfinals against visiting Dana Hills.
“His knee and ankle joints were very stiff and he tried to warm up, but
couldn’t play,” Mang said. “I think it’s growing pains.”
Bean and Kulmaticki, both juniors who won the PCL doubles crown, swept
three opponents, winning 36 of 47 games.
CdM’s junior doubles partners Randy Myers and Robert Kennedy won two
matches, before being eliminated in the third round, 6-1, 6-0, by
top-seeded Goh Fukugaki and Siege Sullivan from Peninsula.
The Round of 16 will be held Friday at SeaCliff Tennis Club in Huntington
Beach. Semifinals and finals will follow the next day.
