Runners gear up for annual 5K

Noaki Schwartz

CORONA DEL MAR -- It’s time once again for residents to go on a scenic

tour of their community for the 19th annual Scenic 5K.

This year, race chairman Jim Skahan is expecting 3,500 to 4,500 runners

to show up the morning of June 3. Runners will follow the oceanfront

bluffs and wind through residential areas.

“It’s evolved to be the premier race of Orange County,” Skahan said,

adding that participants come from Huntington Beach, Irvine and Costa

Mesa.

There are separate 5K races for men and women, as well as a “Kids’

Dolphin Dash” and a “2-mile Fun Walk.” Prizes will be handed out after

the final event.

When asked how keen the participants are, Skahan said, “It’s fun and it’s

serious.”

“We have one girl who comes and runs every year on crutches,” he added.

Following the event -- which lasts until midmorning -- runners will be

served a breakfast catered by some of the best restaurants in Newport

Beach, including El Ranchito, Five Crowns and Tommy Bahamas.

Nearly two decades ago, the Corona del Mar Chamber of Commerce came up

with the idea for the race as a means for raising money for the

community. While half the money will go to the Chamber of Commerce for

the beautification of Corona del Mar, Skahan said, the rest will be given

to the city for recreation programs.

Races cost between $12 and $20 each, but are all $25 the day of the race.

Registration the day of the race begins at 6:30 a.m. Runners will meet at

the intersection of Ocean Boulevard and Heliotrope in Corona del Mar,

just above the Corona del Mar State Beach parking lot.
