Sailors bow out

NEWPORT BEACH - Newport Harbor High’s Sailors rapped out 10 base
hits, including home runs by Justin Jacobs and Garrett Brant, but it
wasn’t even close as visiting Aliso Niguel pounded out a 17-10 Sea View
League baseball victory Thursday.
The loss ends a disappointing season for the Sailors, who exit with a
record of 5-18 overall and in the league’s cellar with a 1-14 mark.
Aliso Niguel (11-14, 8-8), bound for the CIF Playoffs with a third-place
finish in the Sea View, pounded out 16 hits and made an opening statement
that was never quite answered.
The Wolverines scored six runs in the first inning, and although Harbor
bounced back with five runs of its own in the bottom of the first, the
Sailors would never catch up.
Aliso’s Darren Pitchford slugged a two-run homer and Kyle Mowery
delivered a three-run shot in the final inning. Eight other Aliso hits
were doubles, including three by Adam Tanos.
Brant finished with a 3 for 4 effort at the plate, scoring twice and
driving in three runs.
Jacobs and Donovan Wong were each 2 for 3, scoring twice, Wong with a
double.
Other Sailors with base hits were Nick Langsdorf, Sean Rorden and Alan
Lane.
