IRVINE - Big objects. Big meets. Big marks.
That’s what Corona del Mar High senior Sean Fenton achieved at Friday’s
Pacific Coast League boys track and field finals at Irvine.
Fenton obliterated two personal records. His mark in the shot put was an
Orange County best 56-4 to lead the Sea Kings to the PCL team title. He
also threw a PR of 171-7 in the discus to win that event.
It’s the first time Fenton defeated Costa Mesa’s Robert Hulliger in the
shot put. When both of them faced each other in a dual meet, Hulliger won
both events.
“We talked about that before the meet,” CdM Coach Bill Sumner said,
“about his performances in big meets. He lost twice to (Hulliger) in a
poor performance. Today, he performed at a big meet.”
Hulliger wasn’t too shabby either. He was second in the shot put with a
PR of 56-11 3/4, the third best mark in the county. He barely qualified
for next week’s CIF Southern Section prelims in the discus by throwing a
131-4 in his final attempt, just edging University’s Galen Duckles. CdM
junior Taumata Grey was second in the discus with a PR of 134-5.
The Sea Kings also got good performances from distance runners Josh
Yelsey and Travis Beardslee. Yelsey won the 1,600-meter run in 4:24.17
and was second in the 800 with a 2:02.46. Beardslee won the 800 with a
2:01.67 and was second in the 3,200 with a 9:59.2.
Costa Mesa was third in team competition. Greg Stewart, who has the
fourth-fastest county times in the 100 and 200, didn’t run his best
times, but he still won both events easily. Mesa’s Rami Ghebrekious won
the 3,200 in 9:52. And Josh Strickland qualified for CIF prelims with a
third-place finish in the 400 (52.39).
Estancia got solid performances as usual, from Travis Chandler and its
distance runners. In his first year on the track and field team, Chandler
puled off the triple with victories in the high jump (5-10), long jump
(20-3 1/4) and triple jump (42-5 1/4).
Estancia’s Humberto Rojas was second in the 1,600 with a 4:25.61. But he
took a bad spill in the 3,200 in an event where he had the third best
qualifying time. The Eagles’ Mike Casillas qualified for the CIF prelims
by sneaking up on Laguna Beach’s Geoff Moore at the last second. Casillas
accelerated at the finish line as Moore was slowing down, giving him
third place.
Other qualifiers for CdM include Reed Glyer, who was second in the 110
high hurdles (17.19) and was third, the 300 intermediate hurdles and
third in the triple jump (37-1 1/2). Kevin Kramer was second in the 400
(52.36). Matt Moore was second in the 100 (11.97) while Adam Hoyt was
third (12.01).
Athletes are guaranteed spots in the CIF prelims next week with a top
three finish or by reaching a qualifying time.
