Fountain Valley High School will one day have a new film room, and Marina
High School in Huntington Beach should be getting new technology thanks
to Sunday’s Run for the Roses and Walk for the Marina fund-raising
events.
The 16th annual Run for the Roses brought in a bit more than 250 runners
and walkers and netted about $5,000 -- numbers that are equal to last
year’s event, said Toni Abeyta, chairwoman of the campaign.
The annual Run for the Roses supports Fountain Valley High School’s
athletic program. This year, the money will be used to build a film room
so the football team can watch plays and games of other teams.
The group will dedicate the room to Scott Lang, a junior who died in
November during a playoff game practice.
“He was a wonderful athlete,” Abeyta recalled. “He was in very good
health and very well liked.”
Abeyta said Lang died of an enlarged heart -- a defect no one had
detected.
Walk a Mile for Marina is sponsored by the Marina High School Education
Foundation. Profits will help update the school’s technology. School
officials want to buy laptop computers because there isn’t enough room
for desktops, according to school officials.
The school is also applying for a Digital High School grant, which will
match up to $750,000 of the school’s budget spent on technology.
At press time, information on how much money the event raised was not
available.
But a few days before the event, co-chair Barbara Pazornik said she was
“overwhelmed” by the number of registration forms pouring in and that her
“high expectations were closely being met.”
Eagle Scout award given to Nguyen
Bryan Bao Nguyen has earned his Eagle Scout Award and will be honored May
12 at St. Vincent De Paul Church in Huntington Beach.
Born in Saigon, Vietnam, Dec. 17, 1981, Nguyen came to the United States
in 1989. He is a senior at Fountain Valley High School and plans to
attend Cal Poly Pomona in the fall to major in computer engineering.
For his Eagle Scout project, Nguyen painted tables and playground slides
for the Montessori Child Development Center. With help from Troop 274
members, the project took three weeks.
Nguyen’s hobbies include basketball, karate and volunteering at St.
Vincent De Paul Church.
