IRVINE - Newport Harbor High’s softball team could only muster two
baserunners against host Irvine Friday as the Vaqueros, ranked No. 8 in
CIF Southern Section Division I, rolled to an 8-0 Sea View League
victory.
Shelby Crisp’s double in the sixth was the only hit for the Sailors
(9-12, 0-5 in league). Kristen Smith got hit by a pitch from Irvine
pitcher Kari Singley to account for Newport’s other baserunner.
That was the only mistake Singley made as she struck out six for her 15th
victory. Her sister, Kendra, hit two home runs.
“Our girls tried hard,” Newport Harbor Coach Jess Martinson said. “They
didn’t give up. But (Irvine) was just too much.”
The Vaqueros improve to 15-7 and 3-2 in league. Newport hosts Laguna
Hills Wednesday in a league game.
In a nonleague softball game, Estancia managed a run on two hits, but it
was all Santa Ana in a 12-1 mercy-rule decision.
