NEWPORT-MESA SCHOOL BOARD PREVIEW
NEW SCHOOL CALENDAR
* What to expect: The school board will consider adopting a new school
calendar tonight. The proposed calendar holds several changes from the
calendar of past years, but leaves schools’ start date right after Labor
Day. Lorri McCune, assistant superintendent of human resources for the
district, will explain to the board how a committee reached its decisions
on the structure of the proposed schedule.
ZERO-TOLERANCE POLICY
* What to expect: Two members of the Student Political Action Committee
at Newport Harbor High School will make a presentation to the school
board to share their findings from a town hall meeting held in December.
After showing a short video of the meeting, students will share the
concerns and suggestions voiced by students and parents at the meeting
about the controversial policy.
DAY, WEEK OF THE TEACHER
* What to expect: The school board plans to proclaim May 9 as Day of the
Teacher, as established by the State Legislature. They will also consider
observing May 7-13 as National Week of the Teacher. Each school site will
plan activities individually.
CLASSIFIED SCHOOL EMPLOYEE WEEK
* What to expect: The school board will look at passing a resolution
proclaiming the week of May 21-27 as Classified Employee Week, also
established by the Legislature. School administrators will be directed to
post the proclamation so that employees will know of the school board’s
appreciation for them.
