In Brief
NEWPORT BEACH -- For the 10th time, the city will receive a Tree City USA
Award from the National Arbor Day Foundation at tonight’s city council
meeting.
The award is given based on four qualifications: the city must have a
tree department, a city tree ordinance, a comprehensive community
forestry program and an Arbor Day observance.
It appears Newport has all of the above and more. The city will also
receive its fifth Growth Award for demonstrating a higher level of tree
care.
The city’s General Service Street Tree Division is the body responsible
for looking after the more than 30,000 trees standing in Newport Beach.
Maintenance includes trimming, spraying, pruning, planting and removing
trees.
