Boys golf: Newport golfers fade
LA QUINTA - The Newport Harbor High boys team received a lesson in
golf humility Thursday, which resulted in an eighth-place finish in the
Tribute to Youth Tournament at PGA West.
The Sailors were one stroke off the lead with three holes to play, but
experienced a dose of what Coach Jim Warren called “ice-cold putting” and
dropped 10 strokes in three holes to eventual champion Brea Olinda.
Brea won a tiebreaker with University to claim the title.
Kevin Olson shot two-over 74 to pace the Sailors, followed by teammates
Daniel Kush (77), Jake Allanach (78) and Scott Tippett (81).
Wednesday, the Sailors defeated visiting Robert Louis Stevenson High of
Carmel, 7 1/2-2 1/2, in a match-play showdown at PGA West.
Today, Harbor and Stevenson will finish the second half of a
home-and-home match in which the Sailors lead by 33 strokes. The two
teams tee off at 7 a.m. at Big Canyon Country Club.
