MISSION VIEJO - When Newport Harbor High and Santa Margarita were

stuck in the Sea View League together, the Sailors’ 1,600-meter relay

team couldn’t beat the Eagles.

In Saturday’s Orange County Track and Field Championship at Trabuco Hills

it was a different story.

Newport’s 1,600 relay squad of Richard Weber, John Peschelt, Dan Moyer

and Trevor Jones became the first group to beat Santa Margarita this

year.

A group that Sailors’ Coach Bim Barry calls the best relay team in 20

years at Newport shattered their personal record with a 3:20.72 to win

the 1,600 relay. Esperanza became the second team to beat Santa Margarita

this year, finishing second. But for Newport, all those losses from Sea

View League dual meets were still fresh.

“It’s been many, many years since we’ve beaten them,” Jones, who ran a

47.8 as the anchor, said. “We had a bye week and we worked really hard

together. It’s a great PR for us.”

Jones continued to rewrite Newport’s record Saturday. The UCLA-bound set

his fourth school record in the 100 with a 10.87. He was second by a

tenth of a second behind Edison’s Darryl Poston, and just a hundredth of

a second ahead of Costa Mesa’s Greg Stewart.

“I’m very satisfied,” Jones said, “I got to add my fourth school record,

and I finally got my start to be as good as my sophomore year.”

Jones also won the 110 high hurdles (14.44) and the 300 intermediate

hurdles (37.76) to earn the award as the meet’s top sprinter/hurdler.

Moyer was fifth with a PR in the 300 (40.11) to earn two points for the

Sailors.

Peschelt also had a big day for the Sailors. He shattered his old PR in

the 800 and finished second behind Tustin’s Alonso Smith, who had a

state-best 1:52.87. Peschelt had a 1:56.04.

“Just going out so fast, I didn’t think I was going to keep it up for the

whole race,” he said. “But being fast really helped me in the first 300.”

CdM’s Josh Yelsey was sixth with a 1:57.69. He set a PR in the 1,600

with a fourth place time of 4:22.54.

Right after the 800, Peschelt went over to the high jump area and

finished tied for third with 6-0. As a team, Newport, the defending

champion, finished third with 49 1/2 points.

Estancia’s Travis Chandler also tied in third place, equaling his PR. He

was seventh in the triple jump (41-9) and 19th in the long jump (19-10

1/2)

Costa Mesa’s boys track and field team finished in a tie for seventh as a

team with 24 points with big performances from Stewart and Robert

Hulliger.

Hulliger captured the shot put title with a PR of 54-6 1/4, equaling the

county’s top mark. He beat out a crowded field, including the favorite,

Esperanza’s Travis Jones, and Pacific Coast League rival Sean Fenton of

CdM. After the shotput, he was 16th in the discus with a 142-3.

“I’m not surprised I won,” Hulliger said. “I just came here to win.”

Stewart was .11 seconds from being the fastest man in Orange County.

Instead, he was third, coming in a virtual tie with Newport’s Jones and

Poston.

“I thought it was a tie,” Stewart said.

He almost won the 200, coming in second at 22.24. Nevertheless, he came

away with two PRs after a disappointing dual meet with Laguna Beach,

where Stewart aggravated an ankle injury.

“I’m very happy with my finishes,” he said. “To finish in the top three

in Orange County is a great feeling.”
