The Huntington Beach Pro/Am Surf Series will hold its second event
of the 2000 season today and Sunday at 9th St. in Huntington Beach.
Top surfers from around the world will showcase their talents just north
of the Huntington Beach Pier. Competition will be held in eight
divisions: Super Groms (11 & Under); Juniors (15-17); Mens (18-28);
Masters (29 and up); Longboard (all ages); Womens (all ages), and the
series’ signature division, the Pro/Am (all ages).
Last month’s winners at the series’ first event were Colin Schldhaur
(Super Groms); Brett Simpson (Boys); Todd Hutton (Juniors); Greg Elsele
(Mens); Mike Denicola (Masters); Mike Gillard (Longboard); Liz Kampen
(Womens), and Chris Drummy (Pro/Am).
Anyone, series event director Seth Matson says, can surf in the
Huntington Beach Pro/Am Surf Series.
As of last Wednesday, Matson was still looking to fill the divisions.
With that noon deadline on April 12 having passed, the field is now set
for the weekend.
“We’re ready to pay one surfer up to $500 an hour, no joke,” he said.
“The winner of this weekend’s Pro/Am Division will win $1,000 for surfing
only two hours of competition.”
This weekend’s event is single rated.
Following Sunday’s final heats, an awards ceremony and raffle - which
will feature several prizes, will be held at the Huntington Beach
Brewery.
