Boys volleyball: Tars upset No. 1 Irvine
IRVINE - For the second time this season, the Newport Harbor High
boys volleyball team has upset the No. 1 team in CIF Southern Section
Division I.
Coach Dan Glenn’s Sailors outlasted Sea View League host Irvine, 15-11,
15-11, 7-15, 12-15, 15-12, Thursday, pulling even with the Vaqueros atop
the league standings with three matches to play.
Newport senior Billy Clayton amassed 33 kills. 13 digs, 11 blocks and one ace, while senior setter Kent Turner collected 75 assists, nine digs,
eight blocks and four aces.
Blake Tippett (18 kills and 18 digs), Dustin Illingworth (16 kills and 10
blocks), Adam Tomalas (13 kills) and Brian Gaeta (10 kills) were also
pivotal for Harbor, which improved to 7-3, 4-1 in league.
Irvine (9-1, 4-1) carried the No. 1 ranking in the section and Orange
County into the match.
Newport unranked in Division I and No. 9 in Orange County, previously
knocked Mira Costa from the Division I top spot.
“The first two games we played really well and the last game, Billy just
took over the match,” Glenn said. “He just wasn’t going to lose tonight.”
