Costa Mesa High’s baseball team gets Laguna Hills three consecutive times

in a heated Pacific Coast League battle and comes away with two

victories. The Mustangs win the first meeting, 9-6. Winning pitcher Mike

Adelmund collects three hits.

In the second game, Mesa is an 11-4 winner. Mike Broesamele gets the win

and goes 3 for 3 at the plate. The Hawks prevent a Mesa sweep with a 4-3

win in the last meeting.

Joey Herman hits the game-winning double in Estancia’s 5-4 thriller over

Aliso Niguel in PCL baseball.

Danny Pulido throws a complete game as Newport Harbor’s baseball team

beats Woodbridge, 3-1.

Newport Harbor’s boys volleyball team gets a 15-7, 15-10, 6-15, 15-12

victory over Back Bay rival Corona del Mar. Max Spooner dishes out 93

assists for the Tars. Brian Coleman leads CdM with 32 kills.

Newport’s Cara Heads wins the discus with a throw of 128-11 at the Orange County Girls Track and Field Championships. Laura Wilson sets a personal

record with a toss of 38-5 1/2 in the shot put.

Estancia’s Kevin Byrne scores 15 points and collects nine rebounds for

the South team in the Orange County All-Star Basketball Game. CdM’s Brian

Fracalosy and Dominic DeGrazier score nine and four points, respectively,

for the South, which loses, 91-74.

In the girls all-star game, Newport Harbor’s Mandy Clayton gets seven

points and three steals. Estancia’s Cyndi Richards has two points and

four rebounds for the South.

Costa Mesa’s softball team hammers PCL foe Laguna Beach, 16-2. Jennifer

Long collects three RBIs on three hits for the Mustangs.

Ten years ago

Newport Harbor’s baseball team pulls off the biggest upset of the year by

knocking off Orange County’s top-ranked team, Tustin, 4-0, in a Sea View

League battle. Newport’s Bob Sliker pitches the complete-game shutout. He

strikes out five while only giving up three hits.

CdM’s baseball team also shocks a higher ranked opponent with a 7-3 win

over Sea View League rival Saddleback. Scott Muth drives in four runs for

CdM, and Rees Thorkelson throws a complete game victory.

Estancia’s baseball team pounds University, 15-6, in PCL action. The

Eagles’ Ruben Mora goes 4 for 4.

Newport Harbor’s boys volleyball team knocks out rival CdM, 15-10, 9-15,

15-11, 15-10 in an emotional battle. Mark McAnlis gets 18 kills for the Sailors. Derek Slingsby leads CdM with 12 kills.

CdM’s boys track and field team defeats Saddleback, 69-67. Mark Baram and

Jack Hogan each win two events for the Sea Kings.

Costa Mesa’s boys track and field team easily whips Laguna Beach, 80-29.

Mesa’s Xavier Hanna wins the 400-meter race and the long jump.

Oeange Coast College’s women’s tennis team wraps up an undefeated season

with an 8-1 triumph over Orange Empire Conference foe Fullerton. Mary

Kelly sweeps for the Pirates.

OCC’s men’s tennis team also gets an 8-1 win over Fullerton. Chris Flood

sweeps for OCC.

OCC’s softball team sweeps Golden West for the first time in a season

series with a 7-1 victory. Cathy Scanlan ties the Pirates’ single-season

RBI record with a two-run triple, giving her 29 for the year.
