Boys track and field: Jones’ boys roll, 89-46

Joseph Boo

NEWPORT BEACH - It was pretty simple for Newport Harbor High’s boys

track and field team.

Take Trevor Jones, put him in as many events as possible, and watch the

points roll in. The UCLA-bound senior won four events during the Sailors’

89-46 victory over visiting Woodbridge in Wednesday’s Sea View League

meet.

Jones turned in remarkably fast times in the 110-meter high hurdles

(14.5), the 300 intermediate hurdles (38.9), and the 100 with a 16.8.

“Those are pretty good times considering the conditions,” Jones said.

“And I also ran the 200 right after the 300 (hurdles).”

Indeed, Jones gave Newport an added bonus by pulling off a quick double.

Ten minutes after the intermediates, Jones won his fourth race of the

day, the 200, with a time of 22.4.

“Those were four very good marks,” Newport Harbor Coach Bim Barry said.

“Considering the track conditions and the fact that he didn’t have a lot

of competition to run with, he ran very well.”

The second- and third-place finishers behind Jones were the same in both

hurdles. Dan Moyer’s second-place time in the 100 hurdles (16.1) was a

tenth of a second better than teammate Sean Tupy. Moyer again edged Tupy

in the 300 hurdles, 42.1 to 42.5.

The Sailors, 4-0, 3-0 in league, also got major boosts from their

jumpers, and a healthy Ryan Brill. Brill won the triple jump with a 40-1

3/4. He was second in the long jump (18-10 1/4) behind teammate David

Spenger (19-1).

“Brill hasn’t been jumping very well this year,” Barry said. “His calf

muscle was beat up. But he did a great job, and he’s getting back in form

to what he was last year.”

Spenger’s second-place (39-8) and Moyer’s third-place finish (37-7) gave

the Sailors a sweep of the triple jump. John Peschelt gave Newport its

third jumping victory by winning the high jump with a mark of 6-2.

“Our jumpers did a great job,” Barry said. “We won all three events, and

they did a heck of a job.”

Other highlights for the Sailors include Doug Dukes, who was a

double-winner for Newport in the 800 and 1,600 with times of 2:03.3 and

4:39.8, respectively. Peschelt finished first in the 400 with a time of

53.3. And the Sailors’ Steve Wukawitz slipped into second place in the

discus with a throw of 139-3.

The most exciting race of the day came in the 400 relay. After a sizable

deficit, Woodbridge (0-3, 0-2) staged a furious comeback, and both the

Warriors and Newport finished with times of 45.3, but Newport got the

nod. Newport’s 1,600 relay squad of Moyer, Tupy, Brad Rothwell and Guy

Vackar had a much easier time, winning in 3:42.2.
