Tony Altobelli

Former Newport Harbor High standout Donna Mills was named the

California Collegiate Athletic Association Women’s Track and Field

Athlete of the Week for Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Mills, now a senior for the Toros won two individual events and anchored

a victory in the 400-meter relay.

She set a school record in winning the 800 with a time of 2:17.39 and

took first in the 1,600 (4:45.86). Her 47.96 leg in the 400 relay led the

Toros to victory.

The hottest thing since ABBA has invaded Southern California from Sweden

in the form of the Vanguard University men’s tennis team.

Despite having only the minimum six players on the team, the Lions are

roaring past the competition, led by the “Swedish Four” of Stefan

Johansson, Peter Skrzecnski, Josef Stromberg and Joakim Ulvebrand.

That fearsome foursome, combined up with Finland’s Olli Helminen and the

Czech Republic’s Martin Makovec, has led the Lions to a 14-2 record,

which includes some pretty impressive wins over some of the best teams in

the nation.

Speaking of hot, Concordia University’s Charles Chatman (Costa Mesa High)

was named Golden State Athletic Conferences Athlete of the Week.

All Chatman did was hit .416 during the week with 17 RBIs, 10 runs scored

and five home runs. He also hit a grand slam against Azusa Pacific and

hit a game-winning two-run home run against Concordia University of

Illinois.

Chatman is hitting .362 with 11 dingers and 37 RBIs for the season and

leads the team with 16 stolen bases.

Chatman’s teammate, pitcher Matt Broesamle, also from the Land of

Mustangs, isn’t doing too shabby for the Eagles either. He’s 4-3 with a

5.07 ERA with two of the team’s three complete games. His 40 strikeouts

and 65 2/3 innings lead the pitching staff.

q

Cross country standout Johann Appell (Estancia High) was named to the

District 8 GTE All-Scholastic Team at Long Beach State.

Appell, son of Estancia distance-running coach Charlie Appell, is a

kinesiology major with a 4.0 GPA.

His former Eagles’ teammate Arceli Martinez took first at the UC San

Diego Invitational in the 10,000 meters (36:40).

For those of you wondering why I didn’t mention baseball sluggers Eric

Wiethorn or Ty Harper, tune in next week.

q

If anyone else knows how other former local prepsters or college players

around the nation are doing, feel free to drop me a line with the

information and I’ll be sure to get it in. Thanks a lot for calling ...
