Their names have appeared on our Big Kahunas list year after year, so we

felt it was time to deem them untouchable. Here are eight men and women

who we feel have shaped our community -- from the Waterfront Hilton CEO

to the husband-and-wife team who own the popular Sugar Shack in Downtown.

STEVE BONE, 51, Huntington Beach ... Waterfront Hilton Beach Resort’s

sharp-witted and polished chief executive ... Development of a second

hotel with a conference center, spa and retail space is underway right

next door ... Finally decided on a name for the new project: the Grand

Coast Resort ... Looking forward to 2002 opening ... Founding chair of

the Huntington Beach Conference and Visitors Bureau and Orange County

Film Commission ... Founding co-chair of the Orange County Tourism

Council ... Sits on the board for the Orange County Business Council ...

Married to Pat, and they have three children: Sara, Jeff and David ...

Preparing for Sara’s wedding this weekend: “My dear wife of 31 years

says, ‘I don’t care if you’re the bride, it’s my wedding”’ ... Nuptials

and reception will be held at the Waterfront, of course ... Likes golf

and tennis but says he thinks about tennis while he’s on the links and

MIKE ABDELMUTI, 61, Huntington Beach ... Owner of Jack’s Surfboards

and Jack’s Garage in Downtown ... Started the Huntington Beach Walk of

Fame ... Donates generously to six local high school sports programs,

the Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley police departments and the

Huntington Beach Fire Department ... Loves fishing in Alaska and Cabo San

Lucas ... Biggest fish caught is a 320-pound halibut ... Took 45 minutes

to land the fish ... Married to Marli for 38 years ... Has three

daughters and three sons ... Last year’s ranking: 50

BOB AND CONNIE MANDIC, 55 and 59, Huntington Beach ... Married 34

years ... He’s a Huntington Beach native and former mayor ... She serves

on the city’s Planning Commission ... He own Mandic Motors in Downtown,

and she works just a few blocks away at Huntington Beach Realty ... His

towing service has been recognized by the Automobile Club of Southern

California two years in a row ... He loves to fish. His biggest catch was

a 154-pound yellow fin tuna ... She’s an avid horsewoman with a prized

quarter horse ... They have a grown daughter ... Last year’s ranking: 31

TIM AND MICHELE TURNER, both 45, Huntington Beach ... Michele’s

parents started Downtown’s ever-popular Sugar Shack ... Tim and Michele

took over from them in 1980 ... They have regulars dating back 32 years

... Married 25 years ... Met in the sixth grade ... Couple has a girl,

two boys and four dogs ... Michele manages the cafe ... Tim has worked

for the city for 26 years as its adopt-a-beach program coordinator ...

Supervises all maintenance crews and weekly volunteer beach cleanups ...

Couple recently went to Hawaii ... Last year’s ranking: 20

BOB BOLEN, 57, Huntington Beach ... Founding member of the Surfer Walk

of Fame and the Downtown Merchants Assn. ... Owns Huntington Beach Realty

in Downtown ... Invented surfboard fin with a “turbo tunnel” that will

go into production in the next few months ... North side of the pier is

his favorite place to surf ... The inside of his office looks like a surf

shop ... Also owns Surfboards by The Greek ... Got nicknamed in high

school because maternal grandparents are from Kalamata, Greece ... His

four children call him that ... Married 36 years to Patricia ... Has

three grandchildren ... Coaches Anaheim Mission Beach Boys roller hockey

... Division I team is going to the nationals in Toronto this year ...

Last book read and movie seen is “The Green Mile” ... Last year’s

GORDON LEBEDZ, 53, Long Beach ... Hard-core environmentalist who has

been a leader in the battle to save the Bolsa Chica mesa since the 1970s

... Helped organize the Surfrider Foundation, dedicated to protecting

the coast ... Chairman of the Sierra Club’s 55,000-member local chapter,

the largest in the country ... Surfs every day ... Motto: “The ocean is

not a dump” ... Physician and associate professor of family medicine at

UCI School of Medicine ... Has two grown children ... Last year’s

ranking: 59

DICK HARLOW, 62, Huntington Beach ... Chairman of the Infrastructure

Advisory Committee ... A development consultant, former assistant

Huntington Beach city administrator, 40-year resident and a Downtown

fixture ... Is on the Chamber of Commerce board of directors ... Also

serves on Huntington Beach High School’s Academy for the Performing Arts

Foundation board ... Saw first opera, “The Marriage of Figaro,” recently

... Has 26-year Bonsai tree collection ... Enjoys going to the movies

with his wife of 42 years ... Last movie seen was “Wonder Boys” ... Four

children, two boys and two girls ... Five grandchildren, three boys and

ED ARNOLD, 60, Fountain Valley ... Managing Editor and co-host of

KOCE-TV’s “Real Orange” ... Vice president of Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

of Southern California ... Board member for the March of Dimes ...

Volunteer for the Special Olympics ... Involved in numerous charities ...

“If we don’t give, the community would suffer, so I do what I can do” ...

Always available to act as the emcee for various community events ...

Announcer for “Dr. Robert Schuller’s Hour of Power” ... Received the Los
