Boys track and field: Mesa boys retooling for 2000.
Barry Faulkner
COSTA MESA - Like their soon-to-be-overhauled facility, the Costa
Mesa High boys track and field team is a work in progress.
Seniors Greg Stewart (100 and 200 meters) and Robert Hulliger (shot put)
are back to defend Pacific Coast League titles for Coach John Carney’s
Mustangs, who open league Thursday at home against cross-town rival
Estancia.
But from there, the points may be hard to come by.
Hulliger won the shot put and discus at the recent La Verne Invitational.
He figures to get some qualify competition from Sean Fenton of PCL
newcomer Corona del Mar.
Stewart, who went on to finish sixth in the CIF Southern Section Division
III Finals in the 200, should also contribute in the long jump.
Junior Josh Strickland, senior Brad Jones and senior Edwin Martinez add
depth in the sprints. They could also combine with Stewart to form a
competitive sprint relay.
Senior Gilbert Salas is another sprinter with potential, according to
Carney.
Junior Louis Day is showing potential in the long jump, high jump and
triple jump, Carney said. Carney also believes Day, a varsity starter in
football and soccer, has embraced his spring sport with new enthusiasm.
Seniors David Jenkins (triple jump and long jump), Eric Connaty (shot and
discus), Dave Weir (triple jump), and Eliseo Martinez (shot and discus)
join Hulliger as members of the field-event crew for the Mustangs.
Juniors Justin Schoettler, Brian HeMenover, Dasan Bushell and Irwin
Salas, all cross country runners, will compete in the distance events.
Junior Patrick Hulliger is the team’s best hurdler.
The Mustangs did not complete a preleague dual meet.
