Baseball: Woodbridge gets ‘Nick’ed by Tars
Tony Altobelli
NEWPORT BEACH - The stubborness of Justin Jacobs and the biceps of
Nick Langsdorf led Newport Harbor High’s baseball team to a 6-5 Sea View
League comeback win over visiting Woodbridge Monday afternoon.
Langsdorf clubbed two home runs, including a tie-breaking blast over the
left-center field fence in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving
Newport its first league win in three attempts. He now has four home runs
for the season.
“Woodbridge has a couple of pitchers with some pretty good stuff,” Kiefer
said. “But if you try to throw a fastball in on Nick, you better make
sure it’s WAY in, otherwise, he’ll beat you.”
Langsdorf added a single and three RBIs to his totals, while Jacobs threw
a complete-game five-hitter, striking out five.
“He really competed for us out there today,” Kiefer said. “He had good
movement on his stuff and after a shaky start, he settled down and kept
us in the ball game, which is all I ask of my starters.”
Newport (2-5, 1-2 in league) managed to come all the way back from a 5-1
deficit for the win.
Along with Langsdorf and Jacob’s heroics, Kiefer was pleased with the key
plays from various Sailor players.
“I really liked the fact that from top to bottom, each player had an
opportunity to make something happen and they made it happen,” Kiefer
said.
Trailing, 5-1, in the fourth inning, Jacobs and catcher Garrett Brant
each reached with singles before Alan Lane layed down a perfect sacrifice
bunt, moving runners into scoring position.
A suprise suicide squeeze by Chris Ward brought in Jacobs before Cory
Forsythe laced a double right down the left-field line, bringing in Brant
and cutting the lead to 5-3.
Langsdorf tied the game at 5-5 with a two-run blast to center field,
scoring Donovan Wong ahead of him, who led off the inning with a double
to right.
Brant made a big defensive play behind the plate in the top of the
seventh, cutting down a Woodbridge (2-5, 0-2) rally.
With runners on first and second and only one out, Brant knocked down a
pitch in the dirt and allertly saw the runner on first break for second
which was still occupied by a Warriors’ runner.
Running at the stranded runner between first and second, Brant saw the
runner at second sneaking off the bag and fired a strike at second to
pick off the lead runner, setting up Langsdorf’s game-winning dinger in
the bottom of the seventh.SEA VIEW LEAGUE
