Women’s tennis: Davenport to face Hingis in finals

INDIAN WELLS - Another clash of the world’s top two women’s tennis
players will take place Sunday in the Tennis Masters Series of Indian
Wells.
Newport Beach’s Lindsay Davenport will do battle with with top-seeded
Martina Hingis of Switzerland, a match that seems to suit Davenport just
fine.
Davenport has defeated Hingis the past four meetings and the past seven
of nine matches, including the Australian Open.
Hingis knocked off Mary Pierce of the United States, 6-4, 6-2, Friday,
while Davenport disposed of Russia’s Elena Dementieva, 6-2, 6-1, on
Thursday.
Today’s finals, set for noon, will be a battle of two players at the top
of their games.
Hingis is currently riding an 11-match winning streak and is 19-2 for the
year, while Davenport has dropped only 16 games in her five matches to
reach the finals.
