HUNTINGTON BEACH - Newport Harbor High’s boys track and field team
might not have been at full strength, and its nonleague match against
Huntington Beach was only a preseason meet, but the Sailors were still
impressive Thursday.
Led by three-time winners Jon Peschelt and Trevor Jones, the Sailors got
a 92-44 victory over the host Oilers.
Peschelt took the high jump, 400 and 800-meter races. Fighting off a
prolonged illness, Jones was the winner in the 100, 200 and 110 high
hurdles.
Peschelt won the 400 with a personal best of 51.7 seconds.
“That was his best race of the day,” Newport Harbor Coach Bim Barry said.
He also won the 800 in 2:03.5, a full four seconds ahead of teammate Doug
Dukes. Peschelt went 6-feet to take the high jump by four inches.
Jones just beat out a Huntington Beach runner to win the 100, finishing
with a time of 10.8. He won the 200 and 110 hurdles by much more
comfortable margins. Jones won the 200 in 22.4, 1.7 better than teammate
Justin Newton. His high hurdles time of 14.8 was 1.5 seconds better than
teammate Dan Moyer.
“Considering Trevor Jones being sick,” Barry said, “he was very
impressive.”
Dukes won the 1,600 and 3,200 races by sizable margins. He finished the
mile in 4:51, and his time in the two-mile was 10:36.
In the field events, David Sprenger won the long jump, leaping 19-6 1/2
inches, and was the runner-up in the high jump.
This was Newport’s final tuneup before competing in league next week
against Irvine, and Barry hopes his team is at full strength by then.
“We’re not 100 % yet,” he said. “We don’t have everybody healthy. But
once we have everybody 100 % and start our league schedule next week, we
should be a lot better.”Nonleague
