NEWPORT BEACH - Two dual meets into her young career, Nicole Mackey
already rewrote Newport Harbor High’s record book in girls swimming.
After setting the school record in the 100-yard butterfly in her first
dual meet against Los Amigos, the freshman obliterated two school records
and was part of a third in the Sailors’ Sea View League opener with
visiting Irvine Wednesday, which the Vaqueros won, 103-67.
Mackey first broke Kelly Long’s 18-year-old record in the 200 freestyle
event with a personal record of 1:51.90, which was almost three seconds
better than Long’s 1:54.80.
In the very next event, Mackey won the 200 individual medley with a time
of 2:06.03, a whopping 8.15 better than Rachel Arrow’s old mark set in
1995, but three seconds short of her persnal record.
“I was trying hard in the 200 freestyle because it was a close race,”
Mackey said. “In the IM, it was just fun.”
“She’s just talented in everything,” Newport Coach Ken LaMont said. “She
never ceases to amaze me.”
Mackey was also part of the 200 medley relay team that set the school
record against Irvine. IT was all part of a bittersweet day against
two-time defending CIF Southern Section Division I champion Irvine. While
the Tars (1-1, 0-1 in league) lost by 36 points, they broke three school
records and finished first in five races.
“We were hoping to swim a little better,” LaMont said. “Actually, we swam
pretty good. But they were just faster then us.”
Both Newport and Irvine turned in blistering times in the first event,
the 200 medley relay. The Sailors’ group of Mackey, Jennifer Arrow, Amy
Murphy and Hayley Peirsol set a school record with a time of 1:53.24,
bettering their week-old mark of 1:53.97 from the Los Amigos meet.
But that was only good for second place, as Irvine (2-0, 1-0) turned in
an amazing 1:52.43. The Vaqueros also took third place in the event.
“We were talking about this meet for two weeks,” LaMont said, “we knew
what we had to do, but we didn’t have the speed or the depth of Irvine.”
Murphy won the 500 freestyle with a 5:20.75. She just bested her CIF
qualifying time of 55.07 in the 100 freestyle race with a 55.03, good for
second place against the Vaqueros.
Freshman Hayley Peirsol won the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.48.
She was the runner-up in the 100 butterfly race, finishing in 1:02.65.
Arrow won the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.08, a full two seconds better than
the second-place finisher.
Newport’s 400 freestyle relay team of Murphy, Peirsol, Mackey and Erin
Ball took first place with a time of 3:42.03, improving on its previous
CIF qualifying time of 3:43.57.
