The West Huntington Beach Bruins staged a dramatic comeback from 15
points down, then went double overtime to overtake the Riverside Jurupa
Lakers, 51-46, in the consolation championship game of the National
Junior Basketball boys Division 2 Championship Series playoffs Sunday.
The Bruins, who ended their season with an 11-2 record, battled back from
a 15-point deficit with just seven minutes remaining in regulation time.
The two teams were tied at 46-46 through the first overtime session.
Adam Pierce and Scott Melchert scored 15 and 13 points, respectively, and
it was Melchert who hit a crucial three-point basket in the second
overtime, where the Bruins shutout the Lakers, 5-0.
Justin Chambers, Timmy Mahoney, and Billy Silvestri all had a big hand in
the victory.
