COSTA MESA -- A 40-year-old women suspected of skinning and cooking her
cat in October evaded authorities on Thursday when police attempted to
arrest her, but couldn’t find her.
Debra Kincaid was supposed to appear in court to face an animal cruelty
charge, but when she didn’t show up, her arraignment was pushed back
another day. An arrest warrant was issued while authorities continued
their search.
Kincaid is accused of drowning three of her cats at her Park Avenue
apartment. She allegedly cooked one of the felines, 18-month-old Beauty,
whose remains were found in the sink and the oven.
Neighbors called the fire department after they noticed thick smoke and a
putrid stench coming from Kincaid’s apartment. After the smoke cleared,
police were called when the charred remains of a cat were discovered.
She also allegedly drowned two other cats, Muffin and Bonaventure, in
January 1998, authorities said.
Neighbors said Kincaid sometimes acted strangely and believed she was
responsible for the disappearance of other cats. Kincaid no longer lives
in the apartment where she was detained.
Kincaid was initially admitted to a hospital for a psychological
evaluation. She was later released at about the same time police decided
to submit a criminal case against her to the Orange County District
Attorney’s office.
She faces up to four years in state prison if convicted on all of the
charges.
