Jennifer Ludwicki, a former All-CIF basketball player at Fountain
Valley High now playing for the University of New Orleans, was named
Thursday as the Sun Belt Conference’s Newcomer of the Year.
Ludwicki was given the honors by the conference’s head coaches.
Her nomination marks the first time in 13 seasons of Sun Belt Conference
affiliation that UNO women’s basketball has received on of the league’s
special awards, which this year consisted of player, coach, newcomer,
freshman, and defensive player of the year.
Ludwicki, a 5-foot-11 forward, played two years at Orange Coast College
before signing with UNO.
She leads the Privateers with a 15.9 scoring average and a .781 free
throw percentage, and her 139 free throws made this season are the
third-highest season total in school history and the most in the last 15
seasons. Ludwicki’s best scoring output this season was a 29-point effort
Jan. 3 in a 66-56 victory at Southeastern Louisiana.
Ludwicki was one of 10 players named to the 2000 All-Sun Belt Conference
Team.
UNO, which ended its regular season 11-16, is seeded sixth in the
conference tournament, which opens Friday. The Privateers, seeded sixth,
play third-seeded Florida International (15-12) in a quarterfinal game.
