The Mission OC Blades Red Mite hockey team won four matches last
weekend to win the Torhs Tournament, and qualified for July’s National
tournament in Las Vegas.
The OC Blades opened the tournament with an 8-0 wipeout of the Tidal
Wave, then defeated the AKS Swarm, 4-2, before beating the Bombers by the
same 4-2 score.
In Sunday’s championship final, the OC Blades met up again with AKS
Swarm, and the two teams were deadlocked at 2-2 through two quarters of
play. In the third period, the OC Blades took the lead for good when
Dylan Cruz scored off a fee from Olivia Jakiel for a 3-2 lead.
They later added an insurance goal when Jakiel set up a Joey Laricchia
goal, giving the OC Blades a 4-2 victory and the title.
Cruz was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, and the Blades’
Cody Ross earned the Most Valuable Goalie award.
Laricchia, a forward, and Kevin Morrison, a defender, were named to the
five-member All-Tournament team.
Other members of the OC Blades Red Mite team include Ray Frianeza, Andy
Jakiel, Dustin Nowick, and Newman Collett.
Blades earning Player of the Game awards were Laricchia versus the Tidal
Wave, Nowick (AKS Swarm), and Cruz (Bombers).
