COSTA MESA - Corona del Mar High’s baseball team came back from a
5-1 deficit to defeat Saddleback, 8-6, in the second round of the Newport
Elks Tournament’s consolation bracket Tuesday at Vanguard University. And
all that happened before the fourth inning.
The Roadrunners got five runs in the first two innings, but CdM (1-1)
scored six times in the second to take a 7-5 lead. Catcher Rory McKeever
was the offensive star for the Sea Kings, hitting two doubles in three
at-bats and driving in three runs. Billy Eagle hit two singles for CdM.
After a shaky start, pitcher Cavan Cuyler pitched all seven innings and
picked up the win for the Sea Kings.
“We let them get way out ahead, but our guys immediately stepped up with
the big six-run inning,” CdM Coach John Emme said. “Cavan struggled
early, but he decided to step up.”
