CORONA DEL MAR - For a team that hadn’t reached the CIF Southern
Section Playoffs since 1992, Corona del Mar High’s girls soccer team sure
didn’t forget what to do once you get there.
The Sea Kings scored two goals in the first five minutes of play, setting
the stage for a 5-0 Division IV first-round win over Orange Lutheran.
“We really came out pumped up,” Coach Ron Evans said. “The girls have
been doing a heck of a job coming out fast and today was no exception.”
The win puts the No. 2 seeded Sea Kings (15-4-4), into the second round.
They are at St. Paul (15-10-2) Tuesday afternoon after losing the coin
flip for home field advantage Sunday morning.
Freshman Elisha Morgan got the Sea Kings on the scoreboard first.
Working a beautiful give-and-go play with Julia Livingston, Morgan found
the back of the net in the game’s third minute.
Two minutes later, sophomore Kristin Hanson scored off a nice cross-field
pass from Kate Simon, giving CdM a commanding two-goal lead over the
defending Division V champs.
“I don’t care what division it is,” Evans said. “Defending champions
don’t lose in the first round very often, so we had to be ready to play
hard right from the beginning.”
The Lancers (8-8-3) withstood the onslaught and didn’t allow any more
goals until the second half.
What she lacked in saves, Sea Kings’ goalie Britta Vogele still caught
the praise of Evans.
“She did a great job out there directing everyone and keeping everything
under control so she didn’t have to face many shots.” Evans said. “She
may not have had any saves, but her presence was definitely made out
there.”
Corona del Mar turned on the jets in the second half, scoring three more
times.
Freshman Olivia Mazura sent a pass over to sophomore Allison Harvey, just
past a leaping Lancers’ player. Harvey headed the pass past the goalie
for a 3-0 CdM lead.
Ten minutes later, Morgan made it, 4-0, with her second goal of the game.
This goal came off the deflected shot from Mazura. Morgan sent the loose
ball right into the lower-left corner of the net.
The Sea Kings concluded their scoring when Kelly Halley snuck a shot past
the goalie off a sharp angle.
Evans was also pleased of how his team overcame some rather questionable
calls by the officials, according to the CdM coach.
“You’ll get games like that were the calls just don’t go your way,” Evans
said. “That’s soccer, I guess. I was proud of how we kept our composure
and our focus and didn’t let it get to us.”
