College softball: Vanguard splits two
COST MESA - Vanguard University’s softball team split two pitchers’
duels with Claremont Mudd-Scripp Friday in a nonconference matchup.
In the first game, Gina Liebengood pitched a three-hit eight inning
shutout as Vanguard (5-4) pulled out a 1-0 victory in the extra inning.
Rachel Carver scored on a CMS error in the eighth inning for the Lions.
In the second game, CMS (2-2) got two runs on one hit, with the benefit
of three Vanguard walks in a 2-1 decision. Erin Gomez scored Vanguard’s
unearned run in the third. Lions starter Cheri Smith only gave up two
hits in her first decision of the year.
