AYSO Region 97: Black Magic take tourney title
MISSION VIEJO - The Black Magic, an AYSO Region 97, Division 3
girls team, captured the Southern California 2000 AYSO Plus Tournament
with wins over Pasadena, 3-0, and Fountain Valley, 3-0.
Lauren Curtis, Barbara Jullian and Jenelle Arnold each scored for the
Black Magic in their semifinals win over Pasadena.
Jullian, Arnold and Kara DeMille tallied the goals in the finals’ win
over Fountain Valley.
Leading the offensive charges were Amanda Hoffenberg, Casey Ibbetson,
Alyson Jennings, Kimmy Miller, Robin Senor and Ally Stoltz.
Goalkeeper Kara DeMille maintained the two shutouts with sterling saves,
while Kelly Boler, Victoria Swigart, Kim Hanley and Kristen Jendrusina
anchored the Black Magic’s defense.
In Region 97, Division 5 girls’ action:
Newport Gold All-Stars 4, Costa Mesa 2 - Brittany Patch-DiFiore scored
two goals, while Katie Kay and Leslie Boler each added single tallies for
the Newport Gold All-Stars in their 4-2 win over Costa Mesa.
Solid offensive work was turned in by Rachel Baugh, Alice Cope, Leann
Dickenson, Lily Dierkes, Rachel Foster and Samantha Hill.
On defense, Katherine Farmer, Sarah Cope, Laura Clayton and Rachel
Donaldson kept Newport on top, with help from goalkeepers Gina Krotee and
Tia Shefflette.
In Division 5 boys’ action:
Newport All-Star Rhinos 3, Costa Mesa 2 - Jamie Galey, Garrett Heiser and
Brandon Parole each scored for the Rhinos, with assists coming from
Taylor Friend and Jake Kalwitz.
R.J. D’Cruz and Calvin Jhunjhnuwala led the defense, while Avery Paulson
made numerous saves in goal.
Corona del Mar 2, Newport All-Star Rhinos 1 - Adrian Buonanoce scored off
assists from Andrew Kaban and Andrew Wilson in the Rhinos’ 2-1 loss to
Corona del Mar.
Kyle Caldwell, Nicholas Sheffield and Gerardo Avila helped control the
midfield, while Erik Bonn limited CdM’s offense.In Division 4 boys’
action:
Newport Midnight Strikers 1, North Irvine 0 - Chris Vu scored the game’s
lone goal to lead the Midnight Strikers to a 1-0 win over No. 1 ranked
North Irvine.
Vu’s goal came off a corner kick from Kevin Gowdy.
Alex Boullon, Leon Glaser, Kyle Rohan, Shane Vultee, Tanner Prairie and
goalkeepers Tony Riva and Carson Hendrick helped preserved the shutout.
On offense, strong play was turned in by Luke Sequeira, Mickey Gardner,
Travis Mayfield, Cameron Kilmer and Andrew Nahin.
