Girls water polo: Newport finishes eighth

IRVINE - Newport Harbor High’s girls water polo team lost twice
Saturday at the Irvine Southern California Championships, but still
finished in eighth place at Irvine.
In the seventh place game, Foothill (16-7), who Newport beat, 7-5, the
previous week, got revenge with an 11-6 win. Katherine Belden led Newport
(18-7, ranked No. 7 in CIF Southern Section Division I) with three goals,
But No. 3 Foothill’s Daylene Coberly and Brittany Hayes combined for
seven goals.
Newport’s Jenna Murphy scored twice and Kyndra Cox once for the Sailors.
Their goalie, Heather Deyden, made eight saves.
In the fifth place semifinals, Long Beach Wilson came back from a 5-3
deficit after three quarters to beat Newport, 8-7. It’s the second time
the No. 2 Bruins (17-7) have defeated the Sailors by a single goal this
season. Cox led Newport’s attack with three goals. Newport’s Ali Taylor
scored twice, and Belden and Erin Ball each had one goal. Deyden made
nine saves.
