Girls water polo: Carlson scores eight, CdM takes 15th place

IRVINE - It was a wild one, but Corona del Mar High’s girls water
polo team won a madcap 14-11 shootout against San Diego Coronado to take
15th place Saturday at the Irvine Southern California Championships at
Irvine.
Freshman Danielle Carlson was THE offensive star for CdM with eight
goals, outdueling Coronado’s Birttany Hansen, who had six. Down, 10-9,
after three quarter, CdM (14-11, ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section
Division IV) exploded for five goals in the fourth quarter for the win.
Christina Hewko scored four times for the Sea Kings. Daniela DiGiacomo
and Melinda Tucker each had one goal for CdM.
In the 13th place semifinals, CdM was edged by Canyon, 6-5. Tucker and
DiGiacomo had two goals each for CdM. Sea King goalie Arin Hendrickson
had four saves.
