CdM hammers Laguna Beach

CORONA DEL MAR - Nobody got hurt.
That’s the best news Coach Elbert Davis could receive as Corona del Mar
High’s girls basketball team easily handled visiting Laguna Beach, 67-27,
in Pacific Coast League action Thursday night.
“We’ve got Estancia and Costa Mesa to play still,” Davis said. “I feel
for Laguna Beach, because we’ve been there, but it’s just hard to get up
for a game like this. Our team played like that tonight.”
Kristen McCoy led the Sea Kings (18-4, 5-0 in league) with 16 points and
eight rebounds. Jackie McCoy, chipped in with 12.
The win puts the Sea Kings two games ahead of district-rivals Costa Mesa
and Estancia in the PCL standings.CdM started early, thanks to the
three-point shooting of Charlene Quon. She hit three first-half treys,
helping the Sea Kings lead by 22 at the half.
“Usually, we start out slow against Laguna Beach, for some reason,” Davis
said. “But we got it going early with some hot shooting.”
Every CdM player scored by the six minute mark of the third quarter,
including junior Mijanou Pham who scored a season-high eight points, all
in the second half.
Corona del Mar had scoring runs of 14 and 13 to blow the game wide open.
Leslie Schmalzried led the winless Artists with eight points.
