Girls basketball: CdM rolls past Saints

SANTA ANA - The Corona del Mar High girls basketball team extended
its winning streak to seven by trouncing nonleague host Santa Ana, 46-15,
Tuesday.
The victory, the Sea Kings’ 13th in their last 14 games, improved the
visitors to 17-4, as they prepare to return to Pacific Coast League play
Thursday against visiting Laguna Beach.
“This was a tuneup before we have to turn up the intensity again with a
league game,” CdM Coach Elbert Davis.
CdM swept the first round of league play (4-0), putting it in prime
position to earn the school’s first league title in recent memory.
Junior Kristin McCoy led the winners with 11 points Tuesday, while junior
Season Meservey chipped in 11.
Andrea Gruber added five points, while Jackie McCoy and Courtney Kawata
had five apiece.
The Saints (3-16), out of the Golden West League, earned a 4-4 deadlock
early and were trailing just 8-4 after one quarter.
But CdM outscored the hosts, 15-3 in the third quarter and 14-6 in the
third, before toning down its defense pressure.
“I’m friends with their coach (Pete Rivas), so we tried to keep the score
down,” said Davis, who not long ago had to hope for similar compassion
from opposing coaches.
“I thought Santa Ana played very hard.”
Laguna Beach (0-18 coming into this week) would appear to be another
probable blowout Thursday, a trend the Sea Kings hope to continue
Saturday against Back Bay rival Newport Harbor.
“We have many years of payback to deliver in that one,” Davis said of the
Newport Harbor clash.
The Sailors have won 18 straight against their former Sea View rivals,
but are 4-16 with an inexperienced cast this season.
