Orange County residents have less than a week to apply for the 2000-2001
grand jury.
County officials said only 84 people have applied for the 19-member
panel, adding that the number of applications received at this time is
less than the usual response rate.
The grand jury serves for a one-year period and is sworn to investigate
the operations of county government and the people who run it. Work is
scheduled to begin July 3.
The grand jury comprises people selected by random drawing from
applicants nominated by Superior Court judges. A grand juror must be at
least 18 years of age, a United States citizen and have resided for at
least one year in Orange County.
Serving on the grand jury requires a full-time commitment for one year.
Jurors must be available five days a week. Some evening and weekend hours
may also be required.
Jurors must also agree that he or she won’t become a candidate or become
personally active in any political campaign.
