Auto Racing: Gurney to receive Shav Glick Award

CARLSBAD - Motor racing legend and Newport Beach resident Dan
Gurney has been chosen the winner of the first annual Shav Glick Award,
given for distinguished achievement in motor racing by a Californian.
Gurney will receive the award at the NASCAR Winston Cup NAPA Auto Parts
500, April 30, at the California Speedway.
Gurney was the first driver to win races in the for major categories of
motorsports: Formula One, NASCAR, Indy Car and Sports Car. He was also
the first American driver to win a Grand Prix in his own car.
A two-time runner-up in the Indy 500, Gurney was selected ahead of
four-time Indy winner Rick Mears, National Hot Rod Association founder
Wally Parks, world champion motorcycle rider Kenny Roberts and the late
owner/racing promoter J.C. Agajanian.
The Shav Glick Award, presented by car care products company Eagle One,
honors the venerable motor sports editor of the Los Angeles Times.
