Locals win at NSSA event

Edison High’s Tim Reyes turned away the challenge of Huntington

Beach’s Shaun Ward Sunday to win the Explorer Juniors Division (ages

15-17) at the fifth event of the National Scholastic Surfing

Association’s Southwest Conference season.

Reyes won all three of his heats to take the competition. The Edison

senior was one of three locals to win division titles.

In the Explorer Mens Division (all ages), Huntington Beach’s Jeff

Deffenbaugh had enough points to get past Surf City’s Brandon Tipton, who

finished second overall. Deffenbaugh won his first two heats, then

finished second to Tipton in the second of two semifinal heats.

Fountain Valley’s Tadaomi Okamura won the Explorer Bodyboard Division

(all ages), edging out Costa Mesa’s Chiron Stewart.

At last week’s competition at Salt Creek in Dana Point, Huntington Beach

High senior Micah Byrne and Liz Kampen, also of Surf City, each won

division titles. Byrne beat out Reyes to win the Open Mens Division (16 &

Up), while Kampen held off San Diego’s Holly Beck to claim the Open

Womens Division (all ages).
