-- Greg Risling
Police are searching for a soft-spoken, nervous gunman who robbed a the
Newport Beach branch of California Federal Bank on Friday.
There weren’t many witnesses to the robbery, which allegedly happened
when a man strolled into the bank, on the 3000 block of West Coast
Highway, at about 3:20 p.m.
Police said the robber, described as a man in his late 40s to early 50s,
was carrying a black bag when he approached an employee. The man
reportedly pulled out a handgun and displayed it for the employee. The
teller gave him an unknown amount of cash and he then fled on foot. No
one was injured.
Police couldn’t confirm what the gunman said to the teller, but he was
described as soft-spoken and somewhat jittery.
He is described as white, about 6 feet tall and 160 pounds with gray hair
and light-colored eyes. He was last seen wearing a denim jacket, khaki
pants and a tan cap.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Newport Beach Police
